This week I’m sharing with you an extensive & freewheeling conversation with musician Derek Evry on the 2004 album Guilt Show by Lawrence, KS rock outfit The Get Up Kids, their last with Vagrant Records. Derek describes Guilt Show as a perfect batch of chocolate chip cookies in the catalogue of TGUK recordings. Guilt Show followed 2002’s On A Wire, which caught many of TGUK’s hardcore fans off guard with its mellower, acoustic driven ballads.
Shortly after recording this episode, we learned via social media the band had parted ways w/ keyboardist James Dewees, who was with the band since 1999 & played a critical role in the sound and textures of Guilt Show. 👋☝️☝️Enjoy!

I had the privilege to speak with my great friend Richard Newcomb about the rock band Jets to Brazil’s debut record from 1998 titled Orange Rhyming Dictionary, their first on indie label Jade Tree Records. JTB was a group that formed following the breakup of 3 key punk bands (JAWBREAKER, who reunited in 2017, Handsome and Texas is the Reason). We geeked out a plenty on the songs and courageously attempted to dissect singer Blake Schwarzenbach’s lyrics and possible correlations to what was happening with JAWBREAKER in the mid 90’s.
